Respite Care

Respite Care

Respite Care is often overlooked by family caregivers. It’s unfortunate because the family caregiver often sacrifices both health and occupational security to care for their loved ones. These family members never complain; they just do, because they dearly love the person under their care. When it comes to bringing someone in to help, some think that is a betrayal of their loved one or their duty to do so.  Others think their loved one would never accept anyone’s care but theirs. Neither is true. Of course you love this person very much, and you demonstrate it daily. Although it is perceived that many older adults are resistant to “outside” help (some even say so out loud), but we’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t learn to love it. Older adults quickly realize that having a new face to talk to, opens their world a little bit. Someone a little bit different, yet someone dedicated to maintaining their routines and ways of doing things. Most look forward to their caregiver arriving, whether that is daily or a few times a week.

We won’t inundate you with the statistics, on health, wage lose, family stress, etc.  They exist, which is why it is essential for all family caregivers to have access to “outside” help.
